let me start off by explaining what has prompted this topic.

my dog is about to undergo TPLO surgery for a ruptured CCL (cranial cruciate ligament, basically the same thing as an ACL in humans) its going to cost me close to three thousand dollars, and is going to require about five months of keeping him as inactive as possible, basically anytime he goes outside hes going to be on a leash. in the last few weeks ive realized just how much he means to me, i never imagined i would spend so much money on him (at one time at least), but hes worth it, to me at least.

so that with that said, i have pets on the brain, who has pets? what kind? and so on.

my dog is a pitbull labrador mix, his name is Ed, hes seven years old and he does just about everything i do, hes been my camping pal since i got him, and i love him to death, hes the kind of dog that chases fireworks rather than run and hide from them.

this picture basically says it all, this was from a camping trip a few years ago, it wasnt posed, i didnt know my friend had taken it untill we got back.

I have one cat, Gizmo. She is... odd o_o

She was a rescued cat found in a bush as a kitten she had been attacked by some sort of bird of prey and had a HUGE gash in her tail, now she can't feel her tail past about the first 2 inches. Its pretty funny cause when she tries to straighten her tail while walking it just makes like a big upside down U, and since she can't feel it sometimes it freaks her out when it twitches on its own. Also she will do things like get inside a box (or her closed top poopbox) and tne end of her tail will be sticking out still.

She is a puppy-cat, she plays fetch, comes running when called, and runs to the door meowing when someone she knows comes home. Of course she is also schizo and despite being incredibly demanding of attention to people she knows, if its someone she doesn't know or doesn't remember she becomes scared witless and hides or claws her way out of your arms if you are holding her.

yeah in most cases i would agree with ya on that, i certainly never thought i would spend this much on him thats for sure, basically what its come down to is that hes an awesome dog, very smart, all that jazz, and i have the money.

to keep him around for a few more years, hes worth it, to me at least.

I'm weird about pets. I know this and freely admit it. I really really care for pets, now I'm not one of those "omg dude ur wearing FUR. FUR IS MURDER." PETA type freaks but I grew up and had access to a lot of different animals throughout my childhood and I personally am one of those people that thinks pets are a part of the family, just as important as crazy uncle joe who molests mailboxes, or cousin pete who paints pubes on statues in the park. I think animals have personalities, think, and are capable of reason to some extent they are just lower intelligence than people (sometimes... www.failblog.org :P).

I'm one of those people that was pretty outraged by the Vick's incident. I think that work animals serve a purpose but must be treated well and cared for not starved and beaten, thats why I hate those pics of baby veal... I mean cows.. where they are penned up and can't even move. At the same time though I'm torn about things like dog fights and cock (*teehee*) fights due to my feelings on peoples rights. I guess I think they are ok as long as the animals were treated well before the fight and are well taken care of after the fight (assuming its not to the death)

I don't think I could just "get a new pet" just because it was expensive to fix em up, but I guess I look at them with the idea that an emotional value can't be placed on a loved pet and putting a financial value on them is kin to saying they are a toy mearly for your amusement and not a living creature.

Except fish, I don't think I can get that emotionally attached to a fish (unless its cute... XD)

Yeah most cock fights are to the death, and even when they are not they kill the loser (kind of how TF2 should work).

The diff between people fighting and animals fighting? People make a rational choice to fight and typically there are lots of safety precautions in place, most animals are abused horribly in order to "train" them to fight to the death.

I'm not a PETA freak, I love steak and such but I don't like animal cruelty at all its one of my pet peeves. I'll eat a chicken, but at least keep the damn chicken HAPPY till you kill it for food, don't stuff it in a small cage where there are so many other chickens it can barely turn around because its so tightly packed.
